Pastoral Transition

For the past three years, Rev Dr. Scott K. Cox has blessed Central with his commitment to our Open & Affirming covenant, challenging and comforting sermons, a deep gift for pastoral care, and the bold vision of becoming a Justice & Peace congregation.

This time and process of transition will be conducted in the spirit of Central’s energized outreach – the re-opening of Plymouth Harbor, our embrace of technology, our attention to children, and our intentional welcome and programming for 20s and 30s adults. Embracing our continuing ethos, in short: Open, Progressive, Christian, we look ahead to all that yet may grow, even surprise us.

Exciting Update:

On April 3, 2024, the Designated-Term Senior Minister Search Committee announced the Rev. Elizabeth Mitchell Clement as its sole candidate to serve as DTSM.

  • During this time, the DTM will focus on five (5) specific efforts, which are detailed in the section below.

Focus of the Designated-Term Senior Minister

A) Developing a clearly articulated mission, vision, strategic plan and financial plan for the next five years, including milestones, accountabilities, and action-reflection opportunities;

B) Strengthening and supporting the church’s full-time staff complement and lay leadership pipeline

C) Enlivening worship and facilitating inspiring intergenerational worship, and faith formation experiences, including supporting technology-driven outreach and worship;

D) Supporting the church’s pastoral care function and the implementation of our social justice values;

E) Engendering a strong commitment to financial stewardship and sustainable giving throughout the congregation.

What is a Designated Term Senior Minister?

A Designated-Term Senior Minister is a called position for a designated time for a defined purpose. You can review our defined purposes in the “focus” section.

What is a Supply Minister?

A supply minister is typically hired for a short period, in our case 4 months, and will support preaching and pastoral care. Unlike a Senior Minister, they will not supervise staff, or engage the congregation or our lay leadership in visioning or strategic planning.

It may be helpful to think of this role as a “bridge” between Rev. Cox and our future Designated-Term Senior Minister.

Is This Process Really As Long As It Seems?

That depends on how you define “long!” Central has been blessed to have several ministers who have served for lengthy periods of time. Many congregations engage a trained “Interim” minister to guide a year of intentional inquiry after the release of a beloved minister to create the space for a new settled minister. Central has chosen to engage a guide in the role of a DTM to move us along a defined strategic path we feel we successfully launched but did not complete. Our goal over the next couple of years will be to achieve a pace of transformation that allows discernment of the long-term Central to which we will invite our next Settled Senior Minister.
